HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM AN OLD POET

It's not really celebrated here in the UK, well not as much as the US and/or Canada.

Before I started writing about the lack of drug regulation and appalling behaviour of the pharmaceutical industry, I was a poet, well... a hack.

Here's a blast from the past with two of my efforts. Both were written in 2001

THE DARK

Don't be afraid as I enter your room
Just let your mind drift like a floating balloon.
I've come to take the remains of the day,
Go deeper little one and let your mind stray.
Dream of the swings over the park,
Hurry now small child for it will soon be dark.
If you wake up you'll have nothing to fear
Just sit up in bed and let your mind clear.
For I am your friend, I mean you no harm,
So don't be afraid, stay cool, stay calm.
Let your eyes wander through my blanket of black
And don't wish me away for I'll always come back.
It's light that is evil as it enters your world,
Ordering you to see things that make your toes curl.
So don't be afraid as your day turns to night
Just remember I'm here to cast out bad light.

THERE IS A GHOST IN MY HOUSE

There is a ghost in my house
Frank Everts is his name.
He died 15 years ago
now isn't that a shame?
He treads my creaky floorboards
every night at half past ten
and he told me in a dream once
of how he died back then.
In 1983,
July to be precise,
he was diagnosed with cancer
caused by his smokin vice.
He refused to have the treatment
only tablets for his pain.
He died alone in my room,
now isn't that a shame?
His spirit wanders round me
at times of great unrest,
like when I'm feeling lonely
or when I feel depressed.
Goodnight Mr Everts
I'll see you in my dreams
where everything that happens
is not quite what it seems.

GlaxoSmithKline - Filthy, Disgusting, Abhorrent...and that's Just the Plant! Read the Charges!

Is this the way to Puerto Rico

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, STATES OF CALIFORNIA, DELAWARE, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII , ILLINOIS, INDIANA, LOUISIANA, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, NEVADA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW MEXICO, NEW YORK, TENNESSEE, TEXAS, and VIRGINIA, THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA and THE CITIES OF CHICAGO AND NEW YORK, ex rel . CHERYL D. ECKARD,

Vs

SMITHKLINEBEECHAM CORPORATION D/B/A/ GLAXOSMITHKLINE, SB PHARMCO PUERTO RICO, INC. , and GLAXOSMITHKLINE PUERTO RICO, INC.

Browsing through the court documents has left me wondering how such malpractices were ignored for so long by GlaxoSmithKline.

It's common knowledge that Cheryl Eckard was appalled at the state of the plant in Puerto Rico, she even told her seniors, for this, it appears, she was fired.

The drugs affected by the Glaxo's conduct include Paxil, Paxil CR, Avandia, Avandamet, Coreg, Bactroban, Abreva, Cimetidine, Compazine, Denavir, Dyazide, Thorazine, Stelazine, Ecotrin, Tagamet, Relafen, Kytril, Factive, Dyrenium and Albenza.

Examples of defective and/or misidentified products that the defendants released to the United States market from the Cidra plant are:

a. Drug product that was mixed up with drug product of a different type or strength, e.g., 30mg and 10 mg tablets of an anti-depressant mixed in the same bottle, and 12.5 and 6.25 mg tablets of a heart medication mixed in the same bottle.

b. A diabetes medication that was sub-potent and/or superpotent.

c. An antibiotic ointment used to treat a skin infection common in small children that was contaminated with a microorganism associated with bacteranemia, urinary tract infections, meningitis, wound infection, and peritonitis.

d. An injectable drug used to treat nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy that was contaminated with micro-organisms.

Further, on information and belief, during the times relevant to this complaint employees of the defendants diverted reject drug product from the Cidra plant to black markets in Latin America. The defendants’ management failed adequately to investigate these allegations. On information and belief, this resulted in the distribution of reject drug product to the United States market and the submission of false claims for drug product that was defective.

You read it correct folks!

Antidepressants containing different dosage strengths.

Heart medication containing different strengths.

A diabetes medication with a defect.

A children's ointment that was contaminated with a microorganism associated with bacteranemia, urinary tract infections, meningitis, wound infection, and peritonitis.

And a injectable drug used to treat nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy that was contaminated with micro-organisms.

Not content with the piss poor management of regulating the manufacturing of medications it was also alleged that employees of GlaxoSmithKline diverted reject drug product from the Cidra plant to black markets in Latin America.

"Hey senor, you wanna buy some sheeeeeeet."

Glaxo pleaded guilty to charges brought against them and were fined $750 million.

It is claimed that none of the defective products left the Puerto Rican plant.

Glaxo Whistleblower - Complained to Glaxo and was Fired!

Image: ibtimes.com

Here's the whistleblower, Cheryl Eckard, who humiliated GlaxoSmithKline with regard to the appalling lapses at their manufacturing plant in Cidra, Puerto Rico.

Eckard had gone to Glaxo officials and complained about the lapses at their plant in Puerto Rico . She was fired.

I love the statement from Glaxo.

"We regret that we operated the Cidra facility in a manner that was inconsistent with current Good Manufacturing Practice requirements and with GSK's commitment to manufacturing quality. GSK worked hard to resolve fully the manufacturing issues at the Cidra facility prior to its closure in 2009 and we are committed to continuous improvement in our manufacturing processes. Our commitment to compliance with cGMP is demonstrated by the fact that we have not received an FDA warning letter at any plant since the Cidra facility was cited in July 2002."

No apology then?

For her whistleblowing antics, Eckard will be $96 million better off.

The guilty plea by GlaxoSmithKline sees them admit that drugs made at its former SB Pharmco Puerto Rico plant may have been contaminated or made above or below the properly calibrated dosage.

GLAXO TO PLEAD GUILTY

Hey gringo's, how are things down in Puerto Rico? I hear you had a bit of a bad time trying to defend your misdemeanour's. A criminal charge no less. Let's hope it's the start of many to come.

Yet more loose change to throw at a lawsuit, huh? Your CEO, Andrew Witty, should be held accountable or even JP Garnier, you know, the guy who was given a golden handshake upon his retirement from your company.

My only surprise is, on this occasion, you didn't tout the usual line. "Our contaminated medicines have helped millions of people worldwide...blah, blah, blah..."

PS - Thanks for giving me this opportunity to update the Afterword of my book. You guys sure do rock!

Glaxo to Plead Guilty, Pay $750 Million in Probe of Plant

GlaxoSmithKline PLC finalized a pact to pay $750 million and plead guilty to a criminal charge to settle a U.S. government investigation of manufacturing deficiencies at its former plant in Puerto Rico.

Glaxo previously disclosed in July it had reached an agreement in principle to settle the probe, which stemmed from the manufacture of defective pills including the Paxil antidepressant at Glaxo's plant in Cidra, Puerto Rico, between 2001 and 2005. U.S. authorities found that some tablets could split apart or had inappropriate amounts of active ingredient, posing safety risks. Glaxo has since closed the facility.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston announced the final settlement Tuesday afternoon.

A Glaxo unit, SB Pharmco, has agreed to plead guilty to a criminal felony for releasing into interstate commerce adulterated drugs. Some $150 million of the settlement is a criminal fine, including forfeiting assets of $10 million.

DEAD WRONG - THE DOCUMENTARY - A REVIEW

DEAD WRONG

The documentary, 'Dead Wrong' centres around a mother, Celeste Steubing, searching for answers as to why her son, Matthew, killed himself. The journey she embarks on reveals to her how dangerous the drug, Lexapro and other antidepressant medications can be.

During Matthew's senior year at school he became depressed, enjoyment in sports fell by the wayside for him and he also lost interest in his school work.

In the spring of 2003, Matthew didn't seem to be getting any better so his mother decided to seek professional advice.

A counselor they consulted told them that Matthew's depression was caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and that he may benefit from antidepressants.

Shortly after his consultation the Steubings went to see a doctor. Fifteen minutes later, Matthew left with a sample pack of Lexapro [known as Cipralex in the UK].

Celeste had asked the doctor about the side-effects of Lexapro and was told that they were well tolerated and side effects included headaches, nausea and "maybe some insomnia."

Taking the medication left Matt lethargic, sleepy all the time but unable to sleep. It was then recommended by his doctor that they cut the pill in half, and for three weeks he took a half dose.

Things slightly picked up from that point. Matt graduated from school but was still not himself.

The doctor then suggested that he start taking the full dose again. Once again, Matthew became anxious, nervous and restless, the nightmares also returned.

On July 18, 2003, seven weeks after he started the full dose, Matthew killed himself.

It's an all too familiar story regarding these particular class of drugs [SSRi's]. In fact, it's not surprising to learn that the manufacturer, Forest Laboratories, were accused of aggressively marketing Lexapro.

In 2004, two separate civil suits alleging illegal marketing of citalopram and escitalopram for use by children and teenagers by Forest were initiated by two whistle-blowers, one by a non-practicing physician named Joseph Piacentile, and the other by a Forest salesman named Christopher Gobble who was disturbed at what he witnessed at Forest. [1]

Celeste's journey, as witnessed in the DVD, takes her to many corners of America. Her journey began when her husband came across an article that linked psychiatric drugs to suicide.

Celeste:

"I was horrified, and yet I knew we had found the answer to the biggest question of all. How could this have happened?"

Celeste visits Dr David Stein, Phd Clinical Psychologist, who informs her that the chemical imbalance promotion is misinformation that is accepted by many doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists and even paediatricians.

Throughout the one and a half hour documentary Celeste visits more people in her quest to find the truth. The answers she hears turns her own guilt into anger.

She meets with 8 women who each have their own personal stories to tell, each of them helping Celeste come to terms with her loss.

It's heart-wrenching to watch and listen to these mothers who were duped into believing that their children had a chemical imbalance.

The pharmaceutical industry have, for many years, promoted the use of these drugs with false claims. Mother's like Celeste Steubing have paid the ultimate price because they believed the lies touted by this abhorrent industry.

If you are a parent, or indeed if you are thinking of starting a family, then you owe it to yourselves, to your children, to your future children, to watch this documentary from the stable of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights. [CCHR]

If you have empathy you will, like me, want to embrace each and everyone of the women featured in this DVD. You will want to tell them that you will also start asking questions and you will never allow yourself or your children to be conned by an industry whose sole purpose is to make money with a total disregard for human life.

You will cry when you watch this DVD, don't allow your tears to subside. This is real folks, this is happening and we are shrugging our shoulders in nonchalant fashion because it has not happened to us...yet.

Depression did not kill Matthew Steubing. Greed did.

If you are ignore this DVD because of your belief about the organisation behind it then I just want to add this.

Now, let me fully address the elephant in the room. If you chose to ignore this DVD or this woman's story because of some preconceived idea, that is factually a pharmaceutical PR campaign, namely that CCHR is simple a "front" for the Church of Scientology -- let's just get some facts straight....

Personally, I am sick to the back teeth of this tired, pathetic attempt to discredit a group which has been fighting to expose and eradicate abuses such as those highlighted in Dead Wrong, long before any other activists out there - we're talking 42 years. As the Steubing family said, if they had known about CCHR before agreeing to drug their son, he would be alive today.

How many know that the very first group to expose antidepressants causing suicide was CCHR? It was CCHR as far back as 1991 when their complaints to the FDA and federal officials helped prompt an FDA advisory committee hearing where scores of victims documented by CCHR gave testimony, where CCHR ran ads in the Washington Times exposing the link between antidepressants and suicide. The fact that the FDA's panel members were funded by Pharma delayed the black box warnings from being issued for the next 13 years -- but it was CCHR, that continued to fight to expose this link and truly brought this issue to the national forefront.

I've heard people say that the only reason CCHR is battling the psycho/pharmaceutical industry is that they are looking for new recruits for the Church of Scientology.

Bullshit.

When CCHR started out, in 1969, they were the only group fighting to free people who had been incarcerated in psychiatric institutions, electroshocked, drugged and basically destroyed by psychiatry. I highly doubt they were interested in these damaged souls as new "recruits."

Secondly....their funding. What I came to find out about CCHR is that they are funded, as any other non-profit, by grassroots donations. Don't believe me? Offer them some small cash as a donation or become a member and see if they ask if you're a Scientologist before accepting the much needed funds for their worldwide efforts to stop abuses committed under the guise of mental health.

I don't know of any other organisation that provides free information, DVD's for a small fee, that galvanizes crowds of protesters around the world, that works around the clock focusing on issues raised in the DVD, 'Dead Wrong.'

There will be some who read this review with a raised eyebrow. Bob Fiddaman, a campaigner, promoting the work of CCHR, shock, horror!

There are advocates who write and campaign with passion and there are advocates who criticise the work of the very same people who are trying their damnedest to bring about change. The latter are playing right into the hands of the pharmaceutical industry and all its shills.

Those that have jumped on the pharmaceutical bandwagon of bashing the Citizens Commission on Human Rights need to step back and ask themselves this one fundamental question:

Is the agenda of the CCHR to convert people to a religion or is it to create awareness with regard to the safety of patient care?

Watch this DVD and you will have your answer.

Am I a Commissioner for CCHR? No, but I sure would like to be. They are at the forefront of raising awareness about this fraudulent industry and if that means someone labelling me a Scientologist then that is a very small price to pay for someone else's ignorance.

Dr Louis Cypher Speaks...

Here's an advertising concept, I need some entrepreneurs to back me on this though.

You see, I have this fantastic idea that could turn me into a billionaire, almost overnight if I could just get the backing.

I have a number of products that would be huge sellers, I realised this when I did the maths. To be honest, I didn't need to forecast beyond 2011, the concept is full proof, a money making bunch of products that could earn me billions.

With a bit of tweaking here and there, I could have products that could go viral within days of their launch, I just need to make up some bullshit...yet not be prosecuted for it.

Impossible, I hear you cry...but wait...I have found a clever way to market a number of products that can cure something that doesn't actually exist.

Okay, I'll come clean, my products may cause harm to those who take them, sickness, diarrhoea, nausea, to name a few. But hey, those minor side effects could be caused from over indulging in food any day of the week.

My products would be self-marketing and business would grow on an annual basis. Here's the real gem - I won't have to market it myself, others will do it for me, even better, I won't have to pay them. It's a win, win situation.

First, I have to create a reason for consumers to take my products. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is a great guide for this, hey, if the authors of that manual can create an illness without science then I could quite conceivably manufacture a product to cure that illness, couldn't I?

If I get hauled over the coals for making false claims, I'll simply use theory as my defence.

My products will be aimed at children, I can target four year old upwards to begin with then, once the media is played like a kipper, I could target their mothers.

Okay, my product does have addictive qualities but they can be hid, bizarrely I'm not even at liberty to show that my products can cause addiction.

Stumbling block could be getting a licence to sell my products but coincidently [winks] those that decide on granting me a licence [Angels] receive their wages from me. Oh deep, deep joy. I'm going to be rich beyond my wildest dreams.

Schools could easily be duped into believing that my products were legit, then foster care homes for those unruly bastard children. It will give the teachers and carers much relief too...and they won't even need to consume my products!

I may get a bit of bad publicity once the more severe side effects, homicidal and suicidal thoughts, hit the press but the beauty of my genius plan is that these can quite easily be played down, after all, the main reason the kids will be consuming my product will be based upon their behaviour. If they do jump off a building, hang themselves, shoot themselves or other kids, overdose, stab themselves in the heart etc, I can easily defend myself by claiming they were like that before they took my product, my lawyers would be paid handsomely for this.

Okay, it's immortal, unethical, somewhat psychopathic but it will make me money, a pot of gold that will continue to grow because the promoters are seen as God-like figures. Doctor's, psychiatrists, my angels. Then there are those who have loco parentis, the teacher's [angels by proxy] who, in the main, are widely respected by the kids parents.

I can start off slowly and use shyness as a promotional tool. Shyness is an illness, such a traumatic experience for those who have had the misfortune of being too scared to make friends or read a book in front of their classmates. I even bet their parents wish their kids wouldn't be so shy. If the kid kills himself, my lawyers could quite easily show that their shyness was the factor and not my product. "Your honour, he was so shy that suicide was his only solution." - Ka ching!

Now, with shyness out of the way, I have to target the other end of the scale. Those boisterous brats, you know the ones, the ones who seek attention, they normally sit at the back of the class and disrupt lessons at any given opportunity. Mimicking pupils and teachers, throwing paper aeroplanes, raising their voices so they can be heard above others, you know the type, the psycho children. It will have to be a disorder of some sort so I can sell my product. Again, if they kill themselves, my lawyers will use the defence of them being unstable, "Attention disorder is an illness your Honour, the DSM says so". Bling bling.

With the chemical imbalance [fact, not lies] in place, I could basically convince parents that I can help them control their children. I'll have to devise a program for the teachers too. A test of some sort whereby they can put the shy and boisterous into groups.

So, two ends of the scale wrapped up here, but what about those children in the middle? Ho hum, I could devise some sort of strategy that could show that although they don't have a disorder...they will, more than likely, get one later in life. They can nip it in the bud by using my products. I can smell the money.

With adults already taking my products I can target the mother's, those with child. What could be better than targeting the, as yet, unborn?

Poor women, those baby blues. Pre-natal depression? Take a pill. Post-natal depression? Take a pill. Breast feed your child too, with my lovely product floating around your breast milk. Feed the child, feed me.

Everyone is happy [winks]

I'm working on a cure to stop babies crying...I'll be halfway there if I can launch my products.

I just love my job.

Dr. Louis Cypher.

The great dragon was hurled down--that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. - Revelation 12:9

Glass half empty or half full?

Image: edshunnybunny.files.wordpress.com

It's been a crazy month. News that I cannot yet go public with, a son in Afghanistan, a dog with a tumour and a father hospitalised. That's the half empty glass.

Half full - I had a film crew interview me yesterday, filmed at my sister's place as she has much more room than I...and she does not own a big-ass dog who wants to lick the face off strangers.

My son has some trying times ahead, his first duty is life-risking, a task that he performs alone, save for a sniper who will be close-by. I have spoken with him, the fear in his voice reaching across thousands of miles. Fuck, I'm so proud of him.

My dog, Benn, a 10 year old cross Boxer/Rhodesian Ridgeback is going through the wars himself at present. His tumour [malignant] has returned and increased in size over the past few weeks. Sadly, the PDSA cannot operate and remove it this time... but there is some hope. They have told me they may be able to 'scoop' some away, buying him more time. First, he has to rid himself of a skin infection. Anti-biotics and a solution to bathe the infected area for two weeks. Poor guy is sitting next to me now, looking pathetic as he has a lamp-shade type collar around his neck.

My dad, he was hospitalised a few days ago. Angina seems to be the problem. They are keeping him in over the weekend because they cannot seem to understand why he is getting pain and why his spray does not seem to work when an attack comes on.

The news I cannot speak of will probably be public over the coming days or weeks. I'll write about it then.

Gadzooks, wait for one bus and a whole bunch come at once, eh?

On the plus side:

Yesterday I was interviewed and filmed as part of an award I'm picking up next year in LA. I even had to wear make-up!

My book may be a little late in being published, it's been tough to edit whilst all of the 'half empty' incidents have been hanging around. It is looking very professional with the help and guidance of my editor.

Benn needs to walk now...you ever walked a four legged lamp over a field?

Back soon

Seroxat - Why the withdrawal issue concerned GSK.

One would have thought upon learning that there was a withdrawal issue with one of their drugs, GSK would have pulled out all the stops to help those taking their drug, Seroxat.

Not according to an internal memo.

Glaxo, it seemed, were more concerned how news of a withdrawal issue with Seroxat would affect their sales for their once blockbuster drug.

Take a good look at the image above. The dollar sign with a near bulging bag shows how withdrawal [they call it discontinuation] was a major issue that could have affected sales. The "money-bag" memo can be seen here

You will note that GSK started to defend the withdrawal issue when Eli Lilly, their competitors, raised the issue that Seroxat had a withdrawal problem.

Glaxo write:

Discontinuation events are not a major clinical issue, but are being used as a commercial smokescreen by Lilly in an attempt to retain market share.

The memo to the GSK salesforce team also stresses:

'Discontinuation symptoms' is the preferred term for describing symptoms which may occur when an SSRi is discontinued.

Terminology such as 'withdrawal symptoms' should be avoided as it implies dependence.

Evidence that has been sealed in American courts show that Glaxo knew about the withdrawal issues of Seroxat many years ago but did not alert the medicines regulators or the public. In the meantime, many people suffered because they did not disclose this.

Glaxo have made many out of court settlements in the US because of this evidence. As part of the settlement agreement, the evidence remains sealed and away from public eye.

If I were an employee of the MHRA or FDA I'd be asking for this evidence because I would feel that I had a duty to safeguard public health. I'd ask when they knew about this problem and why it took so long to inform the authorities about it.

This is fraud, plain and simple.

Here's Karen Barth Menzies, Attorney from the US, speaking about GlaxoSmithKline's suppression of Seroxat withdrawal issues.

The scientific data, she says, showed anywhere between 50 and 80% of the patients will have trouble actually stopping the drug.

GlaxoSmithKline's Lawyers - UK SEROXAT LITIGATION AND THE UK PRESS.

It would appear, through my blog statistics, that Addleshaw Goddard, GlaxoSmithKline's lawyers, just can't keep off my blog. Fleet street, it would seem, are also taking an interest.

Good.

Here's some documents for you all to browse.

Here is a PDF that I sent to the MHRA some years ago. It is patients speaking out because they believe the have been affected by severe Seroxat withdrawal. The MHRA did nothing about it. DOWNLOAD

Here is a 74 page document that GlaxoSmithKline previously sealed. The British press should read through it, the revelations are startling to say the least. - DOWNLOAD

The most interesting, and one that Addleshaw Goddard should find interesting, is this one. A nice internal document from GSK that proudly boasts, "ALL SSRi's ARE NOT THE SAME." - DOWNLOAD

If any of the above haven't convinced you, then maybe the following will? It's another internal document from GSK - This time playing down the withdrawal issues assoociated with Seroxat. - DOWNLOAD

Enjoy reading.

FOR DAN

‎"Courage is a resistance to fear, not absence of fear." I am immensely proud of you and your platoon Dan.

Remember that fear and courage are brothers.

I will be with you at all times.

I love you.

UK SEROXAT GROUP ACTION

It appears that information has been leaked to the press regarding the UK Seroxat litigation.

May I remind all of the claimants that you cannot discuss the action without the permission of every claimant in the Group, but that the litigation is ongoing but that in any event as a Trial Judge has been appointed and a trial date fixed this is sub-judice (pronounced sub-jewdisay) and again you are not allowed to comment.

Thanks.

Baum Hedlund Present Poster Presentation at the Selling Sickness Conference in Amsterdam

Confidential documents obtained in antidepressant litigation in the United States and released into the public domain have revealed pharmaceutical industry misconduct, including exposure of hidden risks and overblown efficacy, selective reporting of efficacy and safety, conflicts of interests and rampant ghostwriting of medical journal articles for marketing purposes. ABC NEWS WANTS YOUR STORIES REGARDING ANTIPSYCHOTICS

Image: onlinemediacultist.com

ABC News in the US are looking for stories from people. Here's the blurb:

Are You in the Foster System and Have Been Prescribed Antipsychotics?
"World News" Wants to Hear Personal Stories From Youth and Workers

Are you in the foster care system? Have you been prescribed antipsychotic medications? Do you feel like you have been unfairly given these medicines in order to control you and not because of an actual mental illness? Are you an employee in the foster care system and feel as though psychiatrists or case workers you work with too routinely give psychotropic medicine to youth in their care?

If so, ABC News would like to hear from you.

Please give us details below, including contact information, and a "World News" producer may reach out to you. Thank you.
