A Peckham business owner has been ordered to pay £80,000 for selling unlicensed skin bleaching creams.
The punishment, the latest to be doled out to shop owners in Peckham, was handed to Mohammed Mushtaq, 42, of Peckham Cosmetics on Rye Lane.
Inner London Crown Court ordered Mr Mushtaq to pay £80,553 in fines, costs and confiscation order after an investigation by the Medicines abd Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Southwark Trading Standards.
He has been told he must pay up within two months or go to prison for twelve months.
The MHRA and Southwark trading Standards inspected the shop in 2006 and seized a ‘significant amount’ of unlicensed medicines and banned cosmetics.
Mick Deats, Enforcement Group Manager at the MHRA, said: “Mr Mushtaq has put the public at risk by selling unlicensed medicines. These products, being sold as skin bleaching creams, are potent and could cause serious damage to your health. There are dangers associated with the long-term use of steroid creams, such as thinning of the skin, This case serves as a reminder that will continue to crack down on those who put public health at risk.”
Mr Mushtaq, of Amyruth Road, Brockley, has to pay £64,553 confiscation order, £13,000 for fines and £3,000 in costs, the MHRA has said.
